Sinds de gember ons in de zeventiende eeuw – ten koste van slavernij, genocides, toe-eigening en koloniale verrijking – bereikte, lijkt het vooral uitgegroeid tot een trendy ingrediënt in drankjes in hippe koffietentjes. Toch is de groei van de gember, met zijn woekering, onmogelijke bochten en uitstulpingen in geen enkel geval kapitalistisch, rechtlijnig of planmatig te noemen. Hoe kan de omweg die we zien tijdens de langzame en ondergrondse groei van de gember een voorbeeld zijn voor het maakproces van kunstenaars?

Merlijn Huntjens schuwt het dominante, door mensen bedachte beeld van wat een eindproduct is. Als we ons daar te veel op concentreren vergeten we dat niet alleen de gember, maar de hele wereld, inclusief wijzelf, uit omwegen en kanttekeningen bestaat. ‘Het systeem’ eist dat we communiceren in resultaten, doelen (liefst SMART geformuleerd), winst en affe producten. Dit lijkt haaks te staan op de omwegen die een creatief proces lijkt nodig te hebben. Hoe bied je weerstand daartegen? Tijdens zijn Wintertuinsessie gaat Merlijn, gewapend met gemberraspen, rituelen en weckpotten samen met zijn gasten Do Bongers, broeder Dieleman, Mariken Heitman en Reggy van Bakel dit onderzoek aan.

Yet ginger's growth, with its proliferation, impossible curves and bulges can in no way be called capitalistic, linear or planned. How can the detour we see during the slow and underground growth of the ginger be a model for the making process of artists?

Merlin Huntjens eschews the dominant human-conceived image of what a finished product is. If we focus too much on that, we forget that not only the ginger, but the whole world, including ourselves, is made up of detours and edges. 'The system' demands that we communicate in results, goals (preferably formulated SMART), profits and affe products. This seems at odds with the detours that a creative process seems to need. How do you offer resistance to this?
